Maneuverability and propulsion device for the azimuth thruster with nozzle

The azimuth thruster with nozzle is used in the process of propagating the propeller of the ship by means of a bevel gear system transmission mechanism such that the propeller or the duct propeller can rotate 360° around the vertical axis in the horizontal plane. Because of its zigzag arrangement, it can simultaneously propel and manipulate the ship. The direction of the thrust can be arbitrarily changed, so that the ship can be turned around in place, and it can move forward and backward freely.

The azimuth thruster with nozzle is better than the ducted propeller and the flat-rotor propeller for the maneuverability of the ship before and after the navigation. This is because the duct propeller has a large thrust when it is under the vehicle, but when reversing The thrust is poor and the steering performance is not ideal. On the contrary, the flat-rotor can obtain good maneuverability, but the mechanism is complicated, the cost is high, and it is easy to be damaged. The 360° rotary propeller can make the thrust of the propeller despite the rudder. It is completely converted to the equivalent of the rudder force to facilitate the operation of the ship, and the 360° rotary propeller has a large unit power thrust, and the reverse thrust and the forward thrust are basically the same.

The propulsion unit of the azimuth thruster with nozzle  can be assembled directly in the workshop. It does not require underwater operation. It is very convenient during the installation and maintenance process, but it causes a large loss due to the transmission mechanism and large hub diameter. Its efficiency is generally low, and the organization is complex and the cost is high, and commonly used for ships with high maneuverability, such as ferries.
