Main structural features of the contra rotating azimuth thrusters

The main feature of thecontra rotating azimuth thrusters is a rudder plate having a rudder shape that is integrally provided with the nacelle and has a long axis extending in a direction substantially orthogonal to the central axis of the nacelle. The propeller is located at the end of the nacelle, and when the azimuth propeller of the rudder-plate having the rudder shape integrally provided with the nacelle is rotated on the downstream side of the propeller, the water flow generated by the propeller is guided from the rear flow of the side of the cabin and the rudder.

Because of such a structural design, each of the flaps is operated in accordance with the direction of the water flow from the side of thecontra rotating azimuth thrusters through the side of the rudder plate to the long side of the downstream side of the rudder plate. Therefore, it is possible to operate the flaps without hindering the flow of the propeller, reduce the rudder resistance, and contra rotating azimuth thrusters at a small rudder angle. Further, since the flaps can be independently operated, the rudder force can be increased by operating the flaps at a position where the flow of the water flow is largely changed.

That is to say, the contra rotating azimuth thrusters of this structure not only has good slewing performance, but also prevents hull vibration and vibration of related equipment when the azimuth thruster is rotated.
